Motherboard and cpu

It's my 1st post so go easy!

I am wanting to purchase new Hardware particularrly the bulk of it.
I am just wondering what is the best motherboard and CPU to go by. I am unsure on what is good and what's not.

In terms of motherboard, im up in the air on what to go with. (Intel, Asus, etc)
In terms of CPU's im not sure on AMD, Intel (Celeron, Pentium, XEON).

Above all this, I am unclear what CPU's go with what motherboards and so forth. So I would appreciate some peoples thoughts on what to go by, whats best, whats best for money and personal experience.

make a short list of what you will be doing with the machine
if you want gaming or just web browsing or maybe a good workstation for things like bussiness apps and or movies stuff

this sounds wierd ,but I always try to look a little ahead
so I pick stuff like built in nic
support for at least 2gb of memory
I'm not into music these days
so I buy onboard sound
proceesors: low end intels are cheap but will do video editing
AMDs are all fairly inexpensive ,but they run hotter ned better cooling
make better for gaming

sum it up
combo intel and chips for workstations and amd and mid to high end boards for gaming
If all you need is a web browser and a place for your taxs
go to compusa auctions or ebay and get a used system very cheap

Will be primarily for web browsing and the like. Wont be a lot of gaming but would be handy. But more for Internet(Cable) and just a good workstation.

The money situation - well I havent really set out a budget.
Would be great to see a variety.

ok
look for 2ghz intel with at least capable of 1gb of ram
stick with ide drive type system unless you already use sata
onboard graphics chip and onboard nic look for onboard intel or 3com better than realtek
if you can't find the better on board nic then I would opt for addon intel or 3com
if you have the HDD and the case the combo on ebay goes form
50.00 usd to 125.00
by percentage the ram will cost the most
I just let a 2ghz celeron and board slip by sold for 44.00 usd that was a steal
and darn I need another controller

you can always buy a combo...this one is pretty good for just internet.

ECS mobo and AMD combo

then a HD which runs from $40-90 from 40-120GB
Rams are $30-50 256-512MB
PSUand Case runs from- $30-40
CDRWs- $25-50

I already have a Sony DVD Burner and LCD monitor so its just a little bit of work needed. Some good prices on that site you provided me filipmike33.
