I actually loved The Vikings series with Ragnar Lothbrok, The Last Kingdom series, and The Peaky Blinders to name a few especially with a cunning protagonist if you are so interested.
Notice as it things turn to fecal ( as some describe )it starts to smell not the other way around.

Haven't seen them - although The Last Kingdom is based on Bernard Cornwell's novels and I love his books... but I'm wary, as Masterpiece Theatre made a complete fiasco of Richard Sharpe (Sorry Sean Bean - you were still great!).
