What is the make+model of your router??
My router is provided by Virgin Media. It is called a Superhub by NETGEAR..
Do you think it would be best now to do a fresh install whilst saving documents and so on?

Save the attached file, then RENAME it by deleting the .TXT portion. Then double click on the file to chage IPenableRouting.
Also go to Services

Stop it
set Auto Start to Disable
YES, but let me write that up for you. Do you have the install disk?My router is provided by Virgin Media. It is called a Superhub by NETGEAR..

Ok, we will need to use the recovery partition.
MEANWHILE;
First, backup all your drivers
see https://www.techspot.com/community/...-and-reinstall-them-later-when-needed.151773/
Second, backup all your files in My Documents.
1) determine how much data you have
2) insert USB thumbdrive OR CD-R into the system
drag-n-drop My Documents folder on to the ICON for the media
>the USB will begin copying immediately
>the CD-R will que for writing
Document any programs you purchased and get the Support Website location
to allow you to get another copy.
more later.
*****************************************************************************************************FIRST, go here, download and capture your Product Key - - you'll need it later
SECOND; Print this and read it all before you begin.
THIRD; The actual reinstall will be discussed in the next post.
Let's address some procedures to get the system configured AFTER it has been recovered.
You now have a basic & safe system. Using the LUA account will not let virus's attack system files and this is where you went wrong previously.
- leave the system disconnected from the internet until it's mentioned below
- perform the reinstall(as described in the next post) and provide the System Drivers you saved earlier
- create a password for the Admin Account (like adm-xyz) xyz is not literal, but a space holder for what you like.
- somewhere in the sequence, you will need the Product Key from above
- create a Limited User Account(LUA) for your daily use and give it the password xyz; see the pattern?
- set the UAC prompt; control panel->User Accounts. Click CHANGE USER CONTROL SETTINGS. (SET ALWAYS NOTIFY. You want to know when things are being changed!!)
- shutdown the system; Then reboot and login to the Admin ID
- now connect to the internet and run Windows Update (this will take significant time.)
- when it's complete, you will need to restart
- This time, login to your LUA account.
Pick an antivirus product, download, install and get updates. I use Avast! Free as it scans all email and web-links to protect you.
Now restore your user files that came from the old My Documents\ folder
You can download and reinstall any programs that you had previously.
Hmm; I'm on Intel, not AMD so I can't verify. What System do you have, HP?

****************************************************************************************Yes it is a self-build, but most of the help and know-how was from a near-neighbour who has since passed on; he was a computer technician.
Everything worked fine for several years until now that is.
The chipset drivers were from the manufacturer........AMD K8 Processor Driver (6.1.7600.16385 (win7_rtm.090713-1255)
AND...........AmdPPM
Both created on 14/07/2009 00:19:26

As long as the router has WiFi and you know the SSID/passphrase, the logon mode should not matter.
SECURE your router:
- login on the router using a WIRED connection (this is the right way and if you cant, then just know you will need to login multiple times)
- CHANGE the admin login password and save (you'll need to login again)
- DISABLE remote admin and port 8080 and save
- Change the WAN side MTU to 1492 and save
- backup these settings
- logout
Thanks for the feedback
