Networking issues

Save the attached file, then RENAME it by deleting the .TXT portion. Then double click on the file to chage IPenableRouting.

Also go to Services
find Routing and Remote Access
Stop it
set Auto Start to Disable

Thank you, Late here so will try that first thing in the morning.

My router is provided by Virgin Media. It is called a Superhub by NETGEAR..

Do you think it would be best now to do a fresh install whilst saving documents and so on?
YES, but let me write that up for you. Do you have the install disk?

YES, but let me write that up for you. Do you have the install disk?

I carried out what you advised which I believe was..........
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters]
"Tcp1323Opts"=dword:00000003
"IPEnableRouter"=dword:00000000
"Tcp1323Opts"=dword:00000003

Also go to Services
find Routing and Remote Access
Stop it
set Auto Start to Disable

NUT could not find "IPEnableRouter" under Parameters anywhere so I created one and changed the value as you said.
Services ............"Routing and Remote Access" was already disabled.

Still no joy.

I also do not have my Windows 7 Pro disk.......it was damaged by a 3rd party and is essentially useless.
Is this frustrating or what?

Ok, we will need to use the recovery partition.

MEANWHILE;
First, backup all your drivers
see https://www.techspot.com/community/...-and-reinstall-them-later-when-needed.151773/

Second, backup all your files in My Documents.
1) determine how much data you have
2) insert USB thumbdrive OR CD-R into the system
drag-n-drop My Documents folder on to the ICON for the media
>the USB will begin copying immediately
>the CD-R will que for writing

Document any programs you purchased and get the Support Website location
to allow you to get another copy.

more later.

Thank you. Give me some time to do this as I am a relative newbie!!!

FIRST, go here, download and capture your Product Key - - you'll need it later

SECOND; Print this and read it all before you begin.

THIRD; The actual reinstall will be discussed in the next post.

Let's address some procedures to get the system configured AFTER it has been recovered.
  1. leave the system disconnected from the internet until it's mentioned below
  2. perform the reinstall(as described in the next post) and provide the System Drivers you saved earlier
  3. create a password for the Admin Account (like adm-xyz) xyz is not literal, but a space holder for what you like.
  4. somewhere in the sequence, you will need the Product Key from above
  5. create a Limited User Account(LUA) for your daily use and give it the password xyz; see the pattern?
  6. set the UAC prompt; control panel->User Accounts. Click CHANGE USER CONTROL SETTINGS. (SET ALWAYS NOTIFY. You want to know when things are being changed!!)
  7. shutdown the system; Then reboot and login to the Admin ID
  8. now connect to the internet and run Windows Update (this will take significant time.)
  9. when it's complete, you will need to restart
  10. This time, login to your LUA account.
You now have a basic & safe system. Using the LUA account will not let virus's attack system files and this is where you went wrong previously.

Pick an antivirus product, download, install and get updates. I use Avast! Free as it scans all email and web-links to protect you.

Now restore your user files that came from the old My Documents\ folder

You can download and reinstall any programs that you had previously.

Thanks. Point number 2 above........about performing the reinstall as outlined in what you say will be your next post? Haven't seen that yet.

Have saved the product key.
Have saved the system drivers to a USB stick.

Jobeard, I have stumbled across a problem which could be the cause of my network issues.
It involves the ATI I/O Communications Processor SMBus Controller which as an expert you know is a transmitting processor and a receiving processor, linked to the SYSTEM NETWORK. The transmitting processor and the receiving processor work together to transmit, validate and receive data frames and also used for constructing data frames.

Using Device Manager, the issue is that in safe mode the status is not available for this device. It further adds from safe mode that the driver dated 21/06/2006 version 6.1.7601.17514 is installed.
However, in Normal boot mode from Device Manager it states "no driver is installed for this device" and "no resources have been allocated"
Thoughts?

Hmm; I'm on Intel, not AMD so I can't verify. What System do you have, HP?

This is my system.......

Did you build this for yourself? Where did you get the drivers for the onboard chip set

Yes it is a self-build, but most of the help and know-how was from a near-neighbour who has since passed on; he was a computer technician.
Everything worked fine for several years until now that is.
The chipset drivers were from the manufacturer........AMD K8 Processor Driver (6.1.7600.16385 (win7_rtm.090713-1255)
AND...........AmdPPM

Hi Jobeard, I have decided (in the interim) to purchase this for my desktop, as my router has a wi-fi connection and my kids (when they bother to visit) connect to my internet via this with their laptops.
Greatly appreciate your thought on this please and will it work?
Laptone Wireless Internet USB Adaptor WiFi Dongle 300Mbps For Windows 10 / Win 8 / Win 7 / XP / Vista

Not sure if you are receiving my replies Jobeard.
I've been told there could be up to 40 reasons why I get an unidentified network and no Internet connection in normal boot but still get Internet connection in safe mode.

Question for you Jobeard........when my USB Wi-fi adapter arrives in the post will it matter if I try and connect in normal mode (with no current connection) or safe mode (where I do have internet access) and will there be any difference.?
The USB comes with a CD Rom which I believe has the latest drivers.

As long as the router has WiFi and you know the SSID/passphrase, the logon mode should not matter.

SECURE your router:
  1. login on the router using a WIRED connection (this is the right way and if you cant, then just know you will need to login multiple times)
  2. CHANGE the admin login password and save (you'll need to login again)
  3. DISABLE remote admin and port 8080 and save
  4. Change the WAN side MTU to 1492 and save
  5. backup these settings
  6. logout

Something is interfering with the DHCP in normal mode. Check what non-windows services are running try disabling them. msconfig
Check what programs are loaded on startup. run msconfig
try running "sfc /scannow" without quotes

Hi Jobeard, I'm sorry I haven't been in touch as I lost my internet connection in safe-mode as well!!!
The unidentified network issue in normal windows 7 mode and no connection except in safe mode has been resolved.
Saved all my important work and then did a reinstall (which didn't work), and resorted to a clean install after formatting the hard drive. I believe it was a very corrupt registry that lay as the cause of the problem.
Everything is now fine.
I wanted to thank you for your help, which I found invaluable, and learnt alot from you.
Alls well that ends well.
Many many thanks.

Thanks for the feedback

I'm sorry to bother u again Jobeard, but I have one more problem.

In my windows 7 Pro Desktop I have the Foxconn A88GMV Motherboard.
It has 4 slots for DDR3 RAM taking a Max' of 16GB.

For over 4 years now I have used only 2 of the slots with 2GB in each, using 4GB altogether.

Suddenly, my PC now only recognizes and uses only 2GB of the 4GB of RAM.

Any possible solutions you can think of or that I could try.?

Appreciate your expertise here.

Many thanks.
