Remove the battery from the laptop and see if the laptop powers up with the AC adapter only

Is this in a docking station? Remove the laptop from it and remove the battery. If the laptop doesn't power up with the AC power cord you can use any compaq laptop prior, if the connection is right. Sometimes the MOBO PSU is gone bad and if that's the case you need to replace the MOBO.
