Terraria, the popular action-adventure sandbox game from developer Re-Logic, is set to receive a spiritual successor. The new game is called Terraria: Otherworld and is said to be set in an alternate dimension within the Terraria universe.
Re-Logic is teaming up with Engine Software for the new game. Engine Software is the studio responsible for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PlayStation Vita ports of Terraria.
With Otherworld, players are put in a life-and-death struggle to restore the once-pristine world – now overrun by an evil force that has corrupted nature itself – to its original splendor.
On the game’s website, the developers note that Otherworld explores what might have been with Terraria and approaches gameplay in a new direction. It represents a novel take on the Terraria experience and if you were a fan of the original, you’ll probably like what you see so far with Otherworld.
Although not a true sequel, Otherworld looks very much like the original in terms of setting and general aesthetics. As such, it will likely recycle many of Terraria’s gameplay elements although that’s pure speculation on my part based on the teaser trailer alone.
The game is currently in development for the PC and Mac. A version for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is also being considered, we’re told. For now, we’ll have to sit tight until the Game Developers Conference next month to get more information on the title.
