A hot potato: This year is proving to be the one where AI takes a step closer to the technologies seen in sci-fi movies. Companies say that these systems can improve lives and the economy, but over two-thirds (61%) of Americans believe artificial intelligence is a threat to humanity's future. Those who voted for Donald Trump are even more worried, with 70% of Trump voters expressing higher levels of concern.

Companies are rushing to integrate the likes of ChatGPT and similar generative AIs into their businesses right now. But while CEOs and execs salivate at the thought of a machine that can do the same job as a person in a fraction of the time, many people are worried about the situation getting out of control – and not just on the jobs front.

An online Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted between May 9 and May 15 asked 4,415 US adults their opinions on AI. A massive 61% of respondents believe that AI poses risks to humanity, while only 22% disagreed, and 17% remained unsure.

Looking at specific groups, 70% of Trump voters expressed higher levels of concern over a future threatened by AI, compared to 60% of Biden voters. Elsewhere, Evangelical Christians were more likely to strongly agree that AI presents a threat to humanity (32% believe it's a danger), while 24% of Non-Evangelical Christians strongly agreed.

The good news for the likes of OpenAI is that artificial intelligence isn't Americans' biggest concern; crime and the economy are bigger issues. 77% support increasing police funding to fight crime, and 82% are worried about the risk of a recession.

There have been plenty of worrying signs that the new generation of AI should be taken seriously. Warren Buffett recently compared it to the creation of the atomic bomb. There was also Geoffrey Hinton, known as the Godfather of AI, leaving Google with a warning that as companies take advantage of more powerful AI, the systems are becoming increasingly dangerous. In March, there was a call from leading tech minds for a six-month pause of advanced AI development, and this week saw Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, calling for regulation of the sector, though some say this plea is only to stifle innovation and help his company stay on top, rather than for the good of humanity.

Exactly what kind of AI people are threatened by isn't made clear in the poll, but it likely falls under the general category of machines becoming too smart. The flip side of the coin is that artificial intelligence has plenty of positive aspects, such as drug development, and many people rely on it every day without realizing it. As Ion Stoica, a UC Berkeley professor who also co-founded AI company Anyscale, said, "Americans may not realize how pervasive AI already is in their daily lives, both at home and at work."

Let me just remind everyone that Canada, Australia, and the UK have implemented such laws that you can be arrested, fined, and fired pretty easily for expressing opinions that are not sponsored by the state, especially if those opinions do not agree with a certain protected group. The US is hanging on that thread too, but we have deeper ingrained protections that are barely holding us up as a free speech society. But all of this is being fueled by technology. For those of us that value our freedoms of speech and religion, Ai is a massive threat. We already know that the tech industry is far from neutral on issues that we, up until recently, had the freedom to express openly. Chat GPT has already proven to be an extension of the leftist mind, leaving no question about what ideologies Ai will support. Ai is just another step in the march towards tyrannical technocracy.

I sure the right - can say they want a fiscally responsible govt , with a small footprint , that the govt should not impinge on your everyday life- that the State will not control who you are , your religion of lack of , your gender or sexuality - I live in NZ and I haven't heard Australians get arrested for being right leaning - wanting lower taxes etc .
Maybe I silly - what can't you say - given your constitutional right to freedom of expression ?

Canadian citizen here. Every single law passed by the Parliament either at the Federal or the Provincial level is available for free public online access. Anyone with net access can find and read them, anyone whether located in Burkina Faso, Bulgaria or God knows where can access Canadian laws. Funny how I cannot locate any such oppressive bills passed anywhere. Care to provide a link to any of those anti free speech or anti religion laws implemented in Canada?

I do agree however that AI is a major threat. Whoever thinks otherwise needs to look into how the Chinese government implemented their social credit system. There’s no question AI will be misused catastrophically, even before we manage to trigger a singularity (if we ever reach there).

You mean like Canada freezing the bank accounts of covid protesters or the coppers in the UK arresting people for 'misgendering' someone online?

So this was a law or something? And we’re talking about the same protesters which caused billions of losses in interruptions at the border? The same ones flying Confederate, fascist and Trump flags in front of the Federal Parliament? Same ones? The same “freedom fighters” protesting a US enforced border rule requirement?
That sort of stuff doesn’t fly here, North of the Border, not for a majority of people living here, a lot of them Conservatives.

I forgot that Canada doesn't have anything resembling the US 1st Amendment. Instead Canada has a dictatorship that will freeze your bank accounts if don't follow their draconian COVID rules. btw how's that vaccine working out for ya?
