PC switch-on delay

  1. My PC is Compaq EVO D380mx PIV 845g 512MB, bought in 2002. Runs XP-pro SP2, with AVG free, AVG anti-spyware, ZA, and DiamondCS ProcessGuard. Windows patch uptodate.

This problem has started happening over the past one month. Initially, the PC would boot-up (on pressing the switch) only after some time had elapsed from the main power on state.

Gradually, the delay factor has increased considerably. However, once the PC gets on, it behaves normal, and shutdown is also normal.

What is the likely cause? Thanks,

Failing capacitor in the power supply or on the motherboard?
