Bottom line: A nationwide apartment search website called RENTCafe surveyed 4,750 adults and found that people spent an average of one full workday per week playing video games during the two-and-a-half-month shutdown. Respondents put in more than 110 hours of gaming while stuck at home.

Without a doubt, gamers spent more time playing games during the coronavirus lockdown. It was fairly evident from the amount of content that continued to flow throughout the epidemic despite some unfortunate delays for highly anticipated titles. But just how much time did we spend gaming, and what did we play?

According to RENTCafe's study, nearly everyone questioned admitted that they spent more time playing games than they did before the quarantine. In fact, average playtime went from 5.3 hours to 8.5 hours per week (h/w), a 60-percent bump. Of the five demographics sampled, Gen-Xers had the most significant increase in gaming time, going from 4.5 to 7.9 h/w. However, the 18-25 demographic (Gen Z) spent the most time, gamepad in hand, at 8.7 hours per week.

The overall genre of choice was first-person shooters with Call of Duty being the preferred title. The younger age brackets predominantly played the shooters while the older crowd preferred more casual experiences like Candy Crush or casino-style games. Somewhat surprisingly, Fortnite came in third in popularity among the respondents. It was upset by mega-hit Animal Crossing, which has only been out for a few months.

Spending on games was up as well. All five age groups admitted to spending more money on games than usual. Millennials were the ballers, with 81 percent saying they purchased titles or spend money on in-game transactions. Perhaps not unexpected, Baby Boomers (56 and older) were the thriftiest when it came to gaming, with 68 percent saying they didn't spend a dime on games.

If you are interested in the rest of the findings, RENTCafe has them along with infographics posted in its blog.

STEAM tells you how much time you've spent on individual games. I've spent a hell of a lot of time in CS:GO, DCS world, CoD: MW, C&C Red Alert 2 and Chess.com. My play time daily looks like a Work Schedule.

This quarantine has been Hell for many of us.

Games, sleep and overeating.

Normally, I'd be in Southeast Asia right now but tourist visas are suspended.

Big caveat, survey was only conducted on visitor's to their website. So really this is just a small subsection of the market.

Don't expect it to reflect the greater market. Specific websites have specific userbases and with that comes common preferences and biases. A poll that wants to reflect the broader market needs to go out of it's way to sample as many different sections of the population as possible.

Steam has aggregate game data around somewhere but maybe they only release it at the end of the year for the Steam Awards. Sure, it's Steam-limited but if they get good press from the data release maybe EA/Epic/GOG/etc might do the same as well?

How many of you here read that people play 5-8 hours per week and were like, that's it!?!? I have a full-time job and a family and play AT LEAST 8+ hours of games daily, not weekly. I probably average 60+ hours per week, and my wife maybe 20.

I wouldn’t know...I was busy working to help support their stimulus checks.
Weird, I worked full time and got the stimulus check AND played 60 hours of games a week AND watched TV simultaneously (TVs above my PC). Time to upgrade your **** man and not waller in some pity party.

First week of quarantine I didn't game much, but then I realized I finally had time to catch up on games I've been putting off due to work and life. I easily had a few 12 hour gaming days in a row, some might have been longer, that lasted a few weeks, good times.

I don't understand when people are appalled at how much gaming I do. They spend more time than that watching mindless TV or scrolling through Facebook. Yeah, I'll take my backlog any day. Already beat The Last of Us 2 twice and ready for Tsushima now!

Did I say I was appalled at how much gaming you do? I was promoting my own sloth based nature of gaming while the gaming was good.

But I do agree, Fck Facebook, social media in general is a putrid place existing only to breed vile and repugnant individuals.

How do u find the time for 8 hours a day with all those responsibilities?

Damn, Back when I played WoW during the burning crusade I would hit 7+ hours a DAY! during the week and more on weekends. I had no other responsibilities or hobbies at the time. I can't say it was good for my life in general but I have a load of fond memories from then.

Then it was great. Q.e.d.

What's life if not a sum of experiences? If they make you feel good, you win at life.

That's why I have no regrets, I enjoyed every second of it and in those two years or so I made a lot of great memories. If you are doing something you enjoy and it makes you happy then it isn't a waste of time. The reason I say it wasn't great for my life is because it came at the expense of other stuff in real life that should also be important.

Like every patriotic, red blooded American I did my part to support the internet game wars .....

Yeah I had one guy ask me, when I was talking to him about the last of us 2 game, if I thought I was to old for games. I'm 28 by the way. Some people seem to think their has to be a age barrier to be a video gamer, It's weird.

Not here. too busy thinking and fighting online on many things as bill maher trying to be adulting. Whatever that means.
