Photoshop CS2 scanning problem

recently i have not been able to scan using adobe photoshop cs2. i go to import and my scanner is available. but when i try to scan i get a message that says i have no scanner installed. i have uninstalled and reinstalled my scanner but it has not helped. i have a HP Officejet G85 all in one printer and scanner. it is listed in my device manager and in both printer and scanner areas of the control pannel. printing isnt a problem, but i cannot scan.

im running XP with a 3gig CPU with 1gig ram and an 80gig HDD.
any help is much appreciated.
if i should move this thread to the hardware forum, please let me know.

Can you scan with other applications?

Is "Windows Image Acquisition" service running?

i tried scanning with publisher, microsoft scan wizard and the hp scaning utility and none of them worked. but i was able to scan with roxio image import. how can i find out if WIA is active? is it just an svchost?
