Printer problem...alien ink cartridge

I purchased a recycled ink cartridge online for my HP Inkjet 5610 printer. When I changed the cartridge I am getting a message that states, "Cartridge Error: Refer to device documentation to troubleshoot." The printer takes a #56 cartridge and that's what the recycled cartridge is. It is installed correctly as it clicked in. My instruction manual does not give info on using an alien cartridge. It's Saturday and offices are closed. Can anyone help as I have to print out some documents today. Thanks!
