Problems playing 8cm DVDs

I have a Sony Disc Camcorder which takes 8cm discs. All goes well until we try playing them on our DVD drive. This drive works fine with full size discs but struggles with these smaller ones. It either fails to detect a disc in the drive or hangs up half way through reading it. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the disc - it plays ok in an ordinary DVD player/TV combination.
