What just happened? ProGrade Digital has announced its third-generation CFexpress Type B Cobalt-class memory cards, designed for professional photographers and videographers. The new card comes in a single 1.3TB variant, which is an upgrade over the second-generation models that are offered in 325GB and 650GB sizes.

In a press release, ProGrade said that the new 3rd-gen card offers the same quality as the second-gen models, but leverages PCIe Gen 4 interconnect with NVMe 1.4c host controller interface. The card is fully compliant with the new CFexpress 4.0 specification and backward compatible with the 2.0 specification. It offers read speeds of up 3,400MB/s, burst write speeds of up to 3,000MB/s, and sustained write speeds of up to 2,800MB/s, making it suitable for high-resolution cinema-grade video capture applications.

The new 1.3TB card comes with a metal enclosure that ProGrade claims offers improved durability and heat dissipation. It is also said to come with a thermal throttling function that prevents it from overheating. The operating temperatures of the card range from 14°F to 158°F (-10°C to 70°C), which ensures that it can be used in a wide variety of conditions irrespective of the climate. The card is also X-ray proof, shock-proof, and comes with a 3-year warranty.

In a statement announcing the availability of the new card, Wes Brewer, founder and CEO of ProGrade Digital, said that it will allow "offloading speeds 3x greater than previously possible, providing a dramatic reduction in workflow processing time." The 3rd-generation CFexpress Cobalt card is priced at $1,459.99 and is available for purchase on Amazon, B&H, Adorama, and the official ProGrade webstore, as well as many other retailers around the world.

Alongside the new card, ProGrade also announced the single-slot PG05.6 card reader that the company says is specifically designed for the latest CFexpress 4.0 (PCIe Gen 4) Type B memory cards, offering transfer rates of up to 40Gbps (5GB/sec). The new reader is based on the latest USB 4.0 technology and is equipped with the company's patented magnetic base and an adhesive metal plate that allows users to mount it to any work surface, such as the back of a laptop.

The reader comes with a USB 4.0-certified cable and carries an MSRP of $99.99. Like the memory card, the reader is also available for purchase on the ProGrade Digital website, as well as Amazon, B&H, Adorama, and many other retail outlets around the world.
