Ram question

hello,im curious as to why when i put a 512 mb chip sdram in,it only recognizes 256,also it seems i cant use mixed chips of ram,,such as a 256 and a 128,,would that be setting in bios,,any help be appreciated,,thank you

What are your complete system specs? Computer make and model? What Operating System are you running?

Do you have any idea how much RAM the machines capacity is supposed to be?

You do understand that this is a "collectible" computer. If you can find the mobo manual anywhere that might help.

As far as venturing into areas like updating the BIOS, if this were mine I'd leave it alone, totally alone.

It does seem very picky, not "mix and match" like most of the current crop

Edit; Quite a few Asus boards are notoriously picky about RAM.

My personal solution to the situation would be to start planning my next build. Verily!

Maximum supported RAM is 512MB. See the specs here:
http://www.dealtime.com/xPF-Asustek-Intel-440ZX-Chipset I imagine that you can only use 2 256MB SDRAM modules, of the same type and speed of the original module(s)
