Re Installing O/S CD

I have a 5 year old HP zv 5000 laptop.
Due to the machine being slow, I wanted to wipe out everything, (all important files are backed up) and re-install the O/S CS, and if necessary the Application and Driver recovery
DVD. When I try to put the CD in the laptop, it does not run.
Please help me try to find the solution.

On a five year old computer, your optical drive has probably worn out. A replacement from an online store is only $20 to $25 plus shipping. When the drive is bad, the drive may not be detected, or it may not run the install accurately because it is not reading the disk correctly.
Or it will not be read by the drive if the disk is scratched.
Do you find that the drive is detected. Do you see scratches on the disk. Can you try the disk in a friend's computer to see if it is detected and read on another optical drive?
