Repairability vs reliability: Apple argues that removable batteries add a potential failure...

Yes!!! BTW, who asked "us"? Who let go? If Apple doesn't provide an iPhone with a 3.5 jack you have 2 options:
- "you change", drop all your 3.5 stuff and embrace the lightning (the adapter SUCKS B*LLS)
- you drop apple, and try to "find" something similar/equivalent that suits your needs
Sadly there are A LOT of companies that think that Apple's excrement is gold, and they just follow whatever Apple does, so, when Apple dropped the 3.5 Samsung followed through, and LG, and... and... and... Same story with replaceable batteries (not sure if there was ever an iPhone with one of those), microSD slot, etc, etc.
Consumers let it go without a fight.
Let it go.

Because what you said makes zero sense and I don't even need to explain why. I'm sorry for putting it like this, but that's the simple truth.
If you could explain it, you would. The fact remains that the EU has a lengthy track record of virtue-signaling acts that purport to help the consumer, but are unnecessary, freedom-restricting, and often counterproductive.

Currently in the EU, consumers have a choice between phones with integrated batteries, and phones with replaceable ones. The EU wishes to remove that freedom of choice. That's a step backwards, no matter how you slice it.

Consumers let it go without a fight.
Let it go.
Consumers? What are you talking about? Are you saying that everyone on this thread (just to mention a very small sample) is in line with Apple & Co.? Do you really think that you're the one that is right and everyone is wrong (probably holding it wrong)? It seems that "yes" would be your answer, and so was Steve Jobs and all the others, and that's how we got here (because of a tiny subset of people that "know better" and control the levers). If that's ok with you always, then good riddance; if it was only good "this time" we'll welcome you to the fold when they cross your line (they'll eventually will).

Oh, by the way, you can buy a current generation flagship phone with 3.5mm plug and microSD slot (not swappable battery, though) or even HDMI if you happen to need it.

Large amounts of trash and recycling from the west already gets sent overseas to be burned. Electronics are very hard and expensive to recycle assuming it wasn't just thrown in the trash like most trash and e-waste is. The EU can't save you.
At least EU tried to minimize the impact. Apple should have done a better PR job by not making this ill-advised argument which pretty much confirmed their goal of existence: earn as much money as they can from their customers and watch those same customers burn.

EU is wasting its time on this one. Consumers don't care about saving the planet if it's an inconvenience. NO ONE and I mean NO ONE wants to start swapping batteries on their own.

I think you didn't read what I wrote to you before. I am one of those people who swapped batteries and will do so again if given the choice.

And given the choice even you would do it, this is something I know for a fact. If Apple releases an iphone with a swappable battery you would be the first to buy 10 replacement batteries and sing their praises.

Read what I wrote before to you. I am one of those that does swap batteries and given the choice people will use it.

My father didn't need a new phone a few months ago, he just needed a new battery since it couldn't hold a charge for more than a few hours. But instead I had to spend days teaching him how to use the new phone.

And instead of spending a few tens of dollars to buy a battery I had to spend a few hundred to buy a phone. A complete waste of my and my father's time and money.

Being a fan is a simple life, though: you just need to pay your subscription and consume product. You have brand recognition and a huge and good PR department behind you that you can cite about having the "best" device/system/platform/watch/goggles out there. The good news is that fans don't need to worry about these news, if the EU were to force Apple to build phones with removable batteries then "the iphone 17 will revolutionize the smartphone industry by introducing waterproof removable batteries" to the joy of all the fans, since such batteries will be Apple branded (incompatible with the rest of the market and extremely expensive) and they'll have a different and cool shape/edge (maybe also an island, who knows). It will also demonstrate the Apple is very brave and environmentally minded by adopting this "new and cleaner technology" and we'll see a lot of articles about it (maybe we'll end up discussing again there).

Give me the current number of batteries consumers recycle per year in any country.

Can't find "all batteries", but this is a close second for the EU. Source is eurostat:

"Close to one half (47%) of the portable batteries and accumulators sold in the EU were collected for recycling in 2020. From 2009 to 2020, the collected amount almost doubled. In 2020, 229 000 tonnes of portable batteries were sold in the EU. In the same year, 99 000 tonnes of used portable batteries were collected for recycling."

"Recycling efficiencies for lead-acid batteries for reference years 2012 and 2020 are presented in Figure 2. In 2020, all but one of the EU Member States achieved the target of 65 % recycling efficiency for lead-acid batteries and accumulators."

"Recycling efficiencies for Ni-Cd batteries are presented in Figure 3. Most of the EU Member States achieved the recycling efficiency target of 75 % in both 2020 and 2020, with only a few exceptions."

"For other batteries, the recycling efficiency target of 50 % was reached by nearly all reporting EU Member States in 2020 (see Figure 4). "

You have the stats broken by country here:

I'm curious as to what excuse you'll use next to support anti-consumer practices :)

Edit: for added context as to why the EU is doing so well. where I live, many stores have at the entrance small bins where you can throw used batteries and even broken light bulbs. it's easy to dispose of batteries in major cities. PET bottles too, the bigger supermarkets have huge machines where you get paid for on the spot for recycling (between 0.02-0.1$ per bottle).

Well, you got told.

Not it's your turn to provide evidence that 'no one' wants replaceable batteries, microSD readers, and 3.5mm sockets...

What for? Is there "ANYTHING" that could make you drop Apple and go a different route? What's the point? You'll use Apple products no matter what, and that's fine, for you.
