Residents in rural Chattanooga almost had 10 Gbps internet until the State stepped in

And to think there are those on this site who want gubernment out of our lives. Me thinks the old saying don't look a gift horse in the mouth applies well here. If the company was already self-sufficient, likely meaning that it is doing well with the subscribers it has and it was going to build out the infrastructure with the income it was making from its current subscribers, then why on Earth send the tax payers down sh!ts creek without a paddle like this?

This sounds like the inverse of the situation that so many seem to scream about on this site that gubernment has too many regulations. Well, this is an instance where gubernment has regulated megacorps into the lives of TN. Personally, I do not see how this regulation favors the little guy at all. I would rather have 1Gbps for $70/mo than be beholden to the sh!t service that will now be forced on rural Chattanooga.

The internet and gubernment in the US are a complete joke. As I see it, the current climate of gubernment favoring BIG BUSINESS will not stop until all the puppet politicians are voted out of office.

Don't confuse the terminology here. The public, the consumer, democracy itself, is damaged by DEregulation, and DEregulation is what the corporations control their puppet politicians to do. A regulation-spirited environment would allow for MORE competition because it would prevent Comcast, Charter, etc. from flexing their muscles legislatively and effectively bullying the municipal entities out.

[. The real question for me, however, is whether or not EPB would be selling your Internet history and personal data the same way Comcast does.

From EPB's Facebook...

"You may have heard about recent federal legislative changes affecting broadband privacy protections.
At #EPB, we remain committed to your Internet Privacy. We will never use, monitor, control, share or sell any customers’ website browsing information, Internet usage history, email messages or other content generated from the use of our Internet service. That’s always been our commitment to our customers, and it always will be."

+1 and more if I could.

What gubernment in the US has become is
Of Big Corporations
By Big Corporations
and For Big Corporations

Continuum was right!

The cable Companies are a "Monopoly!" supposedly Ilegal in our country. We have to pay 2X more than the Europeans, for half the bandwidth and poor service. Charter $65 Internet only, for 60 Mbit/s in Oregon "RIP OFF"!
Pricing is different in every state, too. I guess that is what they call "market driven." For instance, in NY, I can get 60Mbit Charter for $45/mo. Not only do these companies have monopolies in specific areas, but you might as well say that they have nationwide monopolies, too.

To be honest, I would not be surprised if there is collusion between the monopolies to fix prices. Someone like the NY AG needs to dig up some evidence and prosecute since this will be applauded by the US AG.

The U.S. is not the place to be for a free-market in internet provision. Too many politicians and corporate heads colluding to do things they should be jailed for.

So many complaints here about corruption and collusion, and all have missed the mark.

In a Representative Republic, you get the government (and by association, the government-business relationships) you deserve. If it were that big a problem, people would organize, hit the streets, campaign, and eliminate those perceived to have "wronged" the consumer.

However, it is easier to sit and gripe while sipping on that latte.

Things will only change when enough people get fed up enough to actually do something.

Still waiting......

That seems to be starting to happen. Unfortunately, I live in a state where "the right people" are in office already so my vote counts little toward voting puppets out.

No, the complaints haven't missed the mark. It's just that people feel powerless and intimidated, and they're helped along by the press who report the news (to increase emotional impact) as if "they who rule" have been given unaccountable power (and we're talking here about the legit press, the kind that Trump professes to hate).

Look, if people are this upset over something so relatively trivial as broadband speed and pricing, think about how they feel about the real important stuff. Somebody just got sworn into the Supreme Court who is not wanted there by the majority of U.S. Americans. Although it's nothing new that the person lacks the required clarity of judgment for the position -- that was already the case for half the justices -- what is new is the procession of dirty and unprecedented tricks that placed him there, moves that completely violate the spirit, even if not the letter, of the constitution. At other times and in other places, this would provoke a reaction that would completely destabilize society. But not here, and not now. The degree of protection of entrenched institutions, the size and technology of police and military and surveillance, make it seem as if protest and disobedience are not only futile but mortally dangerous. The best we've come up with is "***** hats" to protest that the jerk talked disrespectfully about women, and it was a gesture so non-threatening and so ineffectual that it amounted to little more than entertainment.

We make these posts in public forums to try and present clear logic and truth to promote insight and change opinions, even if only one person at a time. As a majority grows greater and greater even a police state will fail as a shield. So keep commenting.
