Sata II help

My hard drive for Sata II does not seem to be working good. For a while now it will not boot properly, I changed boot sequence so that HDD booted first instead of DVD. xp logo appears for 1second then a screen flashes blue for less than 1second and it reboots after asking if you want to reboot normally or in safe mode every time it does this, yet after 2nd or 4th reboot it boots normally and everything is fine. I did notice when I installed the drive that the red cable for the hard drive was extremely loose, but I dont think that is the problem as I have got it fixed. mobo is e-Sata 2 Asrock, I just dont understand why some days it turns on fine and others its picky.

Easy. Test the hard drive with the diagnostics utility from the manufacturer.
Also, test your system RAM.

After that, things get more complicated. Post back with the RAM and HD test resuts.

I have 2048 mb ram.

my cable was bad and did just that
buy good cable
when drive is running how hot does it get
if you can't keep hand on it for more than 20 sec's put fan on it

use memtest to check your ram. Instructions below.
like samstoned said, try a different cable first.. its the easiest and least time consuming of the three suggested.
