Inactive Security Virus removal issue

Status
Not open for further replies.
I recently removed a security virus from my computer. I ran in safe mode with networking ran Malware Bytes SUPERantispyware and regcure. I believe that the virus is gone. I am experiencing some after effects that I cannot resolve nor can I find a clear cut way to resolve it on any forums.

In my toolbar it has changed it, previously I had windows media player and internet explorer docked in my bar, they are now gone.

When I open my start menu the only 2 items in it are Internet Explorer 64bit and "Computer"

My background has disappeared.

It also appears that it has done something to some document and picture files. I have tried to play a game "Tribes Ascend" which all of the "skins" to the client are gone and will not allow me to log into the game. I have also tried completely reinstalling the game however now it says it cannot install it.

Any help in this would be greatly appreciated. I appologize as I do not know the name of the virus that I had gotten. Only had it for a few minutes before I took actions against it.

Thank you

Welcome to Tech Spot! I'll help with the malware.

Chances are good that you didn't remove all of the entries associated with the rogue program. I can give you some help for the 'cosmetic' issues, but we need to check and see what is still on the system:

1. For the 'missing' programs, icons, files, etc:
Download Unhide.exe and save to the desktop.
  • Double-click on Unhide.exe icon to run the program.
  • This program will remove the +H, or hidden, attribute from all the files on your hard drives.
Note 1: This does not remove the malware- only the attribute causing the 'missing' problem.So it is important for you to continue.
Note 2: If you are infected with System Check it is important that you do not delete any files from your Temp folder or use any temp file cleaners

2. For the desktop issue:
B]Correct Display Changes if needed:[/B]
If the desktop background is black or if the theme has been removed:
  • Click on Start> Control Panel> Appearance & Personalization
  • Select Change Theme or Change Desktop Background
=====================================
For problems with startup menu:
Some items may not show on the Start menu. To add them back:
  • Right click on Start> Properties
  • Taskbar and Start Menu Properties screen appears
  • choose Start Menu tab> Click on Customize
  • For Windows XP> Choose Advanced tab
  • Check the items you want back on the Start Menu
  • When finished> click on OK> Apply and close.
==========================================
Please note: None of the above removes any malware- only sets features that may have been changed by malware.
Also, if there is malware remaining on the system, it is possible #2 and #3 won't work.
=========================================
I will need to see what's on the system.Please follow these steps: Preliminary Virus and Malware Removal.

NOTE: If you already have any of the scanning programs on the computer, please remove them and download the versions in these links. {IF Malwarebytes was just installed, you can update what you have and rescan.)

When you have finished, leave the logs for review in your next reply .
NOTE: Logs must be pasted in the replies. Attached logs will not be reviewed.

I am also interested in knowning the name of the malware infection you worked on.
