Shift-key issue in Excel

I recently reinstalled everything (starting with a fresh copy of XP) on a new hard drive. And now while using Excel (office 2000 version), every time I press the shift-key a spade symbol ♠ appears. It does it in new and old documents, but in no other application including word. Uninstalled and reinstalled Excel with no change. Never had this issue before the new install.

Any ideas?
