Speakers or headphones for gaming?

Always headphones. ATH-A900x with a schiit modi/magni stack and an ASUS Xonar Essence. The ATH-A900x are an overall upgrade over the ATH-50x. More balanced bass, clear un-harsh highs, excellent mids, and a much better sound stage. They are detailed but I wouldn't call them merciless when it comes to revealing poorly mastered audio. I would call them an excellent all around set of cans because of this.

I use both speaker and headphones.
* logitech Z103 2.1 is still working - 4yrs in service and counting
* for headphones, Panasonic RP-HTF600-S when playing at night

I haven't had the rear 3 of my 6.1 setup connected for about 4 years now but I do tend to use them in the daytime - they did work quite well and I was initially skeptical about headphones doing as good a job. My 7.1 Medusa cans come out at night (currently working very well with Alien Isolation with the room lights off) or when I set up a LAN game with a mate

If I had a choice to chose only one then I would go with headphones! detailed listening exp in music/movies and games, portable, no disturbance to others around, decent noise cancellation from noisy environment, has mic:)
did I miss something?

For me I have use:
Philips HTS3372D 1000 Watt 5.1 (2x)
Logitech USB Headset H390

As this is simply a question about gaming... 99% of the time, headset and mic. Nothing worse than some douche, with his speakers cranked coming thru the mic with echo's everywhere.

But if you aren't on Teamspeak or in game chat, and wanna use headphones, sure why not.

Personally got some logitech speakers atm, for the non chat gaming / movies etc. And my headset is Sony 2.0 wireless headset which I got for my ps3 but works with ps4 ps vita and pc. Which is kinda win. Comfortable light and lasts enough hours so far for me.
Do miss my recently deceased Roccat Kave 5.1's which I had for a year or 2. Then I guess trod or sat on. Unsure. Too many folds of fat for them to get wedged in.

Yours... Mr Tuttle

What I got sounds good enough for me for Star Trek Online and NeverWinter. Running the same games on 46-inch and 7.1 TrueHD over kill.

Headphones, partly because of detail/immersion and partly because I live in a condo and don't want to be a jerk to my neighbors.

I have severe hearing loss in my right ear from the Army.

Earphones mitigate the loss somewhat as I can sometimes hear the stereo effect and or what's being said to my right. Unfortunately outdoors it's a completely different set of problems. I can't tell where the sound is coming from and sometimes feel like a fool looking this way and that.

It's probably time for a hearing aid, but so far, Vanity trumps.

I personally use my SteelSeries H Wireless headset for general gaming and comms with the clanmates, then my audio-technica ATH-A900x headphones (which are @#$%ing amazing, if I may add) for music/movies, and some games. The SteelSeries H Wireless headset is quite an amazing headset in it's own right..

So yeah, headset/headphones for this guy.. :p

Why would hearing aids be needed while using headphones? Seems a bit counter productive to use both at the same time.
It probably depends on the individuals hearing impediment but I'm no audiologist. Hearing aids, as far as I can tell tend to magnify high frequencies much more than low ones so yeah, I see your point but my sister is very deaf, without her hearing aids she can't hear a thing, headphones are hardly of any use to her.
She won't listen to anything on mine but when I've asked her to to try shes says she won't hear anything but distortion and walks away.

Situation dictates what I use. If I'm gaming on the big screen, I tend to use the 5.1 Surround Sound, but if I'm playing on my PC I tend to use the headphones more. Both have their own set of Pro's and Con's, but I tend to use my headphones more. I have Tinnitus and mild hearing loss from my days in the Army, so I tend to hear more with the headphones.
