Spin down an external hard drive between backups

Is it possible to put to sleep or spin down an external USB hard drive?
I have connected a Seagate 2tb external drive for doing weekly back ups. Apart from unplugging it, (which for me is not very easy) is there any way to 'turn it off' between backups.

? The drive should sleep if it hasn't been called for.Maybe the disk is faulty.

Not all have this feature :sigh:
