I have a wireless router and I'm just wondering what happens when I disable this?

When you disable it you are no longer broadcasting a wireless signal.

Good for when you aren't using it wich increases the security of you network and internet.

After it has been disabled you will see a setting that should allow you to reenable it to make it active.

You can't disable Ssid per se, you can disable the broadcasting of said Ssid. if you remove the Ssid name, your wireless network no longer has a "name" & can't be reached from there on.
