Twitter is reportedly preparing to launch a standalone music app after acquiring music discovery service We Are Hunted last year. The app will be called Twitter Music and could launch on iOS devices by the end of this month, according to a person familiar with Twitter’s plans as first reported by CNET.

As we understand it, Twitter Music will recommend artists and songs based on which accounts you follow on Twitter. The service will use SoundCloud to stream music, that is, if an artist has music uploaded there. Otherwise, users will be able to listen to song previews via iTunes. The app won’t be integrated with other streaming services like Spotify or Rdio.

When launched for the first time, the app will give users a short guided tour of how to use it. Users are encouraged to sign in with their Twitter account to utilize the recommendations feature although this isn’t required. We are told the app’s icon consists of a silver play button with the familiar Twitter bird looking down from the corner.

The layout is expected to consist of four tabs: Suggested, #Nowplaying, Popular and Emerging. As the titles suggest, these tabs highlight recommended songs, music that people in your feed are listening to, trending tunes and up-and-coming artists / songs, respectively.

Neither company has come forward to make the acquisition public nor have they responded to questions on the subject from various media outlets.

Doesn't sound too appealing. Who would want an app to play previews? I know they have sound cloud integration. But, last I checked, that website didn't offer up much in terms of variety.
