Sun released a glimpse of the future for Sparc with plans to release servers based on its future high-end Rock processors...

"The Rock processor family, along with lower-end Niagara models, will employ a design called chip multithreading to let a chip run several tasks simultaneously. Rock previously was code-named 30x because it is designed to run systems 30 times faster than the 1.2GHz UltraSparc III that arrived in 2003."

Rock requires the totally kick *** 65nm process, and should arrive in 2008.

Great and my SNGX processor will be 87 and 1/4 times faster than a current top of the line P4 processor.

I mean come on guys, forcasting processor technology for 2008 is about as reliable as a getting good quality porn out of a 33mhz 486 running win 95.

For our guest, I think they'll be around, but probably not as we know them. They'll have gotten further out of the desktop market, and more into the number crunching/server/db units that they're known for today.

As far as SNGX goes, I think that Sun making this statement isn't too bold, they have a history of meeting long term hardware projections. I think the question really is more wether or not 30x will be "in the times" or already surpassed in 2008.

Frankly, some day I'd like to see what would happen if SGI/Sun Microsystems teamed up for a bit.. Especially if they were to make a desktop gaming unit. (Let's assume that somehow games get ported over, etc.)

Although, I wonder.. Sollaris, Irix, or ??? (And what OS will run under Sun's new processor? Sollaris almost certainly, but..)

Does that package include DSL?

When I saw the thread title, I thought :

Can you smell what the Rock is cooking ?
