If you’ve ever dreamed of playing a real-life version of Mario Kart, SXSW in Austin recently had you covered. Nintendo teamed up with Pennzoil to create a real-life version of the popular kart racing franchise complete with functional power-ups that altered how the karts behaved.

Races consisted of 4-lap runs with four drivers per race that took around five minutes to complete according to Austin360. Anyone over the age of 18 could drive – so long as they passed a breathalyzer test and wanted to wait in a long line. Each kart was equipped with a GoPro camera to capture the driver’s point-of-view. That footage was later edited to include effects from the game and e-mailed to drivers. Sounds pretty neat, no?

Yes, I had to wait over 4 hours to try this thing and ill be honest, totally worth it :D

It was mostly gimmicky, but it was fun and I got in a race with a couple of friends who waited with me. It was worth taking a day off of work to go to, normally I skip SXSW in this day and age because ive been to it a couple of times since I live in Texas.

If your in Austin for SXSW, give it a try, worth the wait.

That looks cool. I'm a big fan of the MK franchise, would love to see this at other (more nearby, and long term) go kart tracks.
