Im on a laptop... and According to windows there is no hard drive.. Hence it cannot be formatted or anything..

When i boot with a windoiws 98 disk.. and i use the DIR command.. it shows the hard drive name as these funny symbols along with some of the files on the hard drive..

What do you think could be the porblem ??? And how could i correct this ??

Is this a Windows 98 laptop or an XP laptop? If it has XP loaded, the funny symbols are there because Windows 98 can't read the NTFS (NT File System) format used by XP. In any case, the hard drive is probably bad and it will need to be replaced. You might try reformating it using the Windows 98 boot disk. If this fails, you know the drive is bad
