Systray Annoyance

By the way, all the other solutions posted so far in this forum by others (and I have read the WHOLE thread from its very beginning) didn't work for me. This is why I ended up with the "ctfmon" disabling solution. At least this works for me (so far, after 20 reboots in 2 days). Thanks to all fellows who brought up this problem.

At least I can access my other programs now by right-clicking on the SystrayX icon. Although the XP systray itself still only shows 2.

I noticed everybody that had this problem had Tweak UI, so I tried uninstalling that, but it didn't work. Then I came across your situation. Works like a charm!!!!!

I had a problem where all my tray icons were gone, in fact the whole sys tray was not visible. I wen't into Taskbar properties but the option was greyed out (!)

I'm using Win XP pro with SP2rc2. One user (me) has everything OK but another (my wife) has the problem described above.

I tried to load systray.exe manually, through startup, through registry - nope !

Then I searched the registry for all "%tray%" entries in the local user and found this one:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] TrayItemsDisplay

After I deleted it, logged off and on - bingo, all icons are there and the option is not greyed out anymore. Phew !

ok guys. It's been a while, but I think I finally came up with a solution that really works:

go to add or remove programs/add remove windows components.

remove universal plug and play (under network services).

restart windows.

reinstall universal plug and play (reverse procedure).

restart windows.

this worked fine for me.

WTF! Sorry for my newness...but the issue is now solved...

I have had this issue since I put on SP2, and it has been ever so annoying (icons disappearing in Sys Tray). But the post right before me has given the correct solution. In XP there is the setting for Universal Plug and Play, which really isn't needed. So uncheck it and walla! Icons come back...

BTW I didn't go back and re-check the Plug and Play option...I think I'm almost afraid to, but realistically it hasn't impaired me from a damn thing.

I've done a bunch of restarts, shut downs what have you and all the while the icons reappear. Thanks so much!

i had the same issues with XP Pro shutting off systray icons. in my case, some of the things were not actually starting. others were. what i did to fix the issue was unplug my computer ofr an hour or so. this is some sort of reset. i do not under stand how it worked but it did

I had this problem a while back. StormBringer touched on the probable reason - too many processes vying for run time and resources at startup.

Get and run a free utility called StartRight. I think you can get it from www.majorgeeks.com. It adds a short adjustable delay between each start up process to eliminate this "thrashing". I uninstalled it in order to install a newer version. I have not installed that yet but the problem does not seem to have returned.

Sys tray loading woes.

After fighting this problem for a long time, I had finally given up and disabled/re-enabled each program that failed to show its sys tray icon. I suppose the volume icon was the most annoying. When I needed it the most it would fail to load. As most of you have found out there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason this latest MS blunder. By the way, as far as I know MS doesn't even attempt to address this latest headache. Perhaps its the 1,000,000 problem with XP, and they are saving it for a special presentation (who knows?) Anyway it appears the "pile-up" theory has some merit, and the icons are trying to load at the same time. I have two computers both home built, both running XP Home sp1 sp2, and they both have the sys tray disappearing/reappearing icons. Thanks to gunny who recommended www.majorgeeks.com and a free utility called StartRight my computers loaded right for the first time in months. True its a little slow loading, but at least its works for now. I've wracked my brain trying to remember when this problem started, but I can't. I suppose it must have been in the last few months, because I use the volume control a lot, and I would have noticed if it had been a long time. I did install SP2 a few weeks ago, but I'm not sure if it triggered any problems or not. What beats the heck out of me is WHY hasn't Microsoft addressed the problem. Anyway so far so good with StartRight. Thanks guys!

I also have the problem and after trying everything in this thread its still the same. I just installed StartRight and it has done nothing. Sometimes 9 and sometimes 3, so the thread continues. Please post the answer when its found.

Also a quick temporary fix is Ctrl-Alt-Delete, use task manager to end the task explorer.exe, then start a new task and open explorer.exe again.
