The resolution race is on: LG jumps the gun, says Apple is working on a new 'iMac 8K'

So to sum up your statements - 4K and 8K monitors require better GPU's. Cool.

In other news... water is wet. :|
The whole concept of a resolution race is rubbish to me, especially with an almost complete lack of scaling support for many programs. I thought using Java programs with defined window sizes as well as poorly written programs, both of which with 0 support for scaling was bad on a Surface Pro 3 (it's practically unusable). It'd be even worse on a 4K screen, and heaven forbid a 5k or 8k screen...
This was my initial point and statement, but I digress. The posts after that were primarly adressing your point about gaming at 4K, which well, I couldn't help but state the obvious, as well as how the timeframe for release will not match up with current capabilities. That being said, I'm done playing tag, cheers~

Someone please tell me what is the goal in this resolution race because I have a feeling that it is nothing else but lying bigger in your products specs sheet to sell it to folks without giving any added value at all...

Peace

4K and 8K benefits photo and video WORK greatly.
I thought that would've been obvious since this article is about Apple computers.
Just because you don't have a use for 4K/8K, doesn't mean no one else will either. ;)

I acknowledge that in my first reply that you forgot about - OS support is coming. You seem to be in a rush to see perfection right now when 4K isn't even close to being mainstream, let alone 8K, and Windows 10 is just a few short months away.

New tech takes time. Be patient.

Now we just need a 120 inch 180 degrees curved OLED display to surround you. Even then pixel density is still high enough that it isn't going to be completely utilized.

I love technology and it is fun seeing these capabilities increase, but I feel this resolution is beyond practical for most usage scenarios.

Now I could see this being very useful for displaying 16 security cameras each at 1080p on one screen.

By the way that first graphic is not scaling the resolutions correctly.

And my reply to that:
I've played around on a buddies Win10 with a 4k display. While it is better than 8.1, there, at this point in time, still has a little bit to be desired. In fact I'm not sure if everything they intended to do is complete yet regarding scaling support. That being said, my largest issue is what I had said in the first part of my reply.
OS Support is only half the battle, But dem pixels will be pretty when it's finally there. Third party software though... That's where the real war is going to be, and will take much longer.

I can point out the flaws and currently problems all I want, but that doesn't mean it won't get better, nor do I think I impied that I needed perfection (the closest thing to that was commenting on what gamers do to achieve "playable" framrates @4k). I even said that performance and support I will get better over time and honestly I'm always waiting for the next thing, patience is probably something I have too much of. =p If they do attempt to market this to anyone besides multimedia professionals (which I agree is the initial intended audience), then all my concerns will be all the more pertinent. I'll probably still drool over the display though, I wonder how Lightroom would play on an 8K screen...

Now I'm done for realsies. :)

I get that photo video editing thing, but the article is not just about apple computers but also display manufacturers.
So this 8K Mac is meant for people who wanna do photo and video editing on an 8K screen? I don't know much about these editing works and about that whole market but seems pretty niche for me. Would this be the "8K Mac for photo editors" and you won't be able to make advantage of 8K in anything else? that's just marketing lvl100 lying....
