I haven't updated anything and I dont know if windows has done it. will this be the problem? does it just need updating?

will go check microsoft now. thanks for replying!

Do this:

For XP right click on my computer and select properties -> go to the hardware tab and click on device manager

For vista click device manager in control panel (from classic view)

Go down to Display Adapter -> Expand and Right click your display adapter and select properties.

Go to the driver tab and post here what driver and driver version you have we can then make sure that it is the correct version.

here are the 2 drivers:

RADEON 9200 SE FAMILY (Microsoft Corporation)
RADEON 9200 SE SEC FAMILY (Microsoft Corporation)

both are versions 6.14.10.6462.

ATI has removed total support for any GPU below 9500

I believe if you are using vista this is definitely the problem - your graphics card probably only supports DX8 or so. Vista has DX10. It will be hard to find a good driver for this. I haven't had an ATI card in a while and if you contact them they might tell you what driver to use. The will either go with an old 6.11 - 6.5 version driver. Let's do this anyways.

go to start and in the search section type dxdiag and hit enter

Click save all information button and attach this file here

For XP you would just go to start - run then type dxdiag and hit enter

My gut is telling me that if you have Vista and this card you will never be able to run Aero and you will never be able to enter sleep mode without crashing. If I were you and you don't want to spend a lot of money look at getting a cheap DX9 compatible card. It will also come with the latest 8.4 drivers

Good point about the drivers for sapphire, as well if you ever have a mobility card in a laptop, drivers should come from the manufacturer of the laptop. Just for future reference.
