Tumblr disappears from App Store after discovery of child pornography

In brief: When microblogging site Tumblr had its official iOS app removed from the App Store a few days ago, the company would only say that it was “working to resolve an issue” with the application. Now, the reason for its disappearance has been revealed: the discovery of child pornography on the platform.

A Tumblr spokesperson told CNET’s Download.com that the site keeps child pornography off its service by scanning every image “against an industry database of child sexual abuse material,” thereby filtering out and blocking such content.

During a routine audit, content was discovered that had not yet been included in the industry database, which meant it was able to pass through the image filter.

Download.com notes that this is the reason behind the app’s sudden disappearance and lack of explanation: child pornography is a crime that requires coordination with law enforcement upon its discovery.

No word on when the iOS app might return to the App Store, but Tumblr says it is still working with Apple to help it happen. The Android version of the app has remained available on Google Play throughout.

Tumblr, which is a subsidiary of Verizon-owned Oath, has faced other issues over its content in the past. The Indonesian government briefly blocked it in March after the firm failed to remove pornographic material from the service.

Tumblr isn’t the only app to be removed from the App Store for this reason. Back in February, Telegram X vanished for a few hours after the store’s team was "alerted to illegal content, specifically child pornography." The material was likely being served via a third-party plugin used by Telegram.

It should stay off of iOS. Tumblr is full of special snoflakez too mentally unstable for the outside world, insane sexual deviancy, and SJW groupthink. It is unsurprising that Tumblr would allow CP onto their site, even accidentally, after seeing the other degeneracy that thrives there.

The fact they have to take the app off the store instead of just deleting the offending posts and report it to the authorities suggests this problem runs a LOT deeper. I cant wait to see how many tumblrinas get caught in the blast radius. Knowing them the images were reblogged for being "strong independent disabled trans PoC mascots" or something to that effect.

Just leave the eternal "everything triggers/offends me" machine off the store, the world would be a better place without Tumblr.

The majority of child pornography I've seen on Facebook, Tumblr and Flkr and Instagram was posted by the kids themselves.

I have a question...

Why aren't people forced to use a credit card to verify their age on social media???

The parents are the ones who should be held to blame.

Save for instances of sex tourism where young children are exploited and posted on the net.

You already have to *confirm* your real age with facebook when you make an account, doesnt stop millions of kids every year from just....lying about their birthday. And much the same way the *M* rating on GTA V doesnt stop kids from playing it, the vast majority of kids could get past this CC limit by simply asking their parents, and their parents would happily help them set up an account.

And what about parody accounts? Group accounts? Those would be annihilated by that policy, so now you have to make exceptions, and rules for those exceptions, ece. Or, heres an idea, what if I dont want to use my real name and age on social media? What if I dont want to give my CC info to social media, which already knows way too much about me? I cant see how that would EVER go wrong.....

We ALL lied about our age online, any kid that watches porn online lies to get past the "you must be 18" blocker. It's much easier to simply teach your kids how to internet safely, just like you teach them to have sex safely. Some will ignore this advice and pay the price, but there is no stopping that.

Let's not paint everyone with a broad brush here. There are plenty of degenerates on the left and the right - let's not forget the numerous religious leaders and pastors also engaged in pedophilia, rape, and child porn.

Well said. Extremists are extremists no matter which type of politics they follow.
