Why the difference between links?

Yes, any given URL can be shown as www.domainName.com or just domainName.com depending on two factors.

The site (domainName) can be registered either way, but the commercial sites are registered without the www (that's known as the subdomain). This allows the domain to support several subdomains, like www, ftp, email, smtp and m or mobile.
