Windows 10 Anniversary Update will double the number of Start Menu ads

I will install. As soon as they disable spying by default at install and introduce win7 updates install selection by default at install. Unlike those 300million users that already updated to 10, I'm not retarded. If not, I'll wait till 2023 till M$ execs grow up. Then will consider working on unpatched OS or will move to something new.

They won't grow up. They make poor business decision after another and no one gets fired at the top. Next windows will be even more horrible and 10 will get worse too. If vulcan gets used by developers and directx12 is as bad as it seems we could see usable linux/steam os in the future. Until then if you have high end computer you really don't have a choice and mcsoft knows it. They will probably come up with a way to make 7 even more unusable too to get more 10 users.

It is amazing how many people don't know that by turning off
all the Cortana nonsense and telemetry, none of this presents a problem.

Multiple machines ... never have seen a single ad.

It's nice you can't even activate cortana here. Wouldn't use it as it uses bing so this is winwin, hope they never bring it here.

Is it just me, or can you just ignore all of the adverts? I tend to just use the O/S to enable me to run other software and not worry about adverts etcetera. If it worries you there are two easy options:
1. don't install windows 10.
2. disable the telemetry and enjoy windows 10.

This just makes me that much more excited for Vulkyn. As soon as AAA's are running on another OS like they should people are gonna jump ship from Windows so fast. They don't realize the more ads they put in the more desperate they look. Sad really, for all the innovation they have they're obligation to financial growth will be what stagnates them back into a software licensing company in a few years. As soon as there's an alternative developers and consumers are out, guaranteed. Especially after all of this data farming and privacy issues with Win 10

The article headline is a bit misleading. What they're referring to ONLY applies after a clean install or newly purchased OEM system, the default start menu layout will show 10 "promoted app" tiles, which ARE NOT actually installed on your system. So in a sense, yes it's an ad --- but you can right click and remove the tile if you don't want it on your Start Menu ever again, or if you try to launch it the app will download and launch.

These aren't going to just pop up on your machine if you're already running Windows 10.

This is why I turned off alot of the bullcrap, so that Micro dont snoop in my PC to see what site I go to and what I do on MY, personal computer and my TIME. to me they have no place in my SYSTEM other then running as a operating system. If I wanted them to snoop in my PC, my setting and my game I would tell them or ask them Hey can you help me fix this issue with them over the phone .. Not by going in to my PC and doing it. I almost wish there was another Operating system that I could us, and that will allow me to us all of the Windows based games and programs. But I dont think there is one that you dont have to program your self, like windows. If they really want to do a update, how about asking us, if we want to install it or added it to the windows updates.. Before FORCING us to take it. I think they would do alot better with customer support ..

Step one when installing Windows 10, install Classic Shell so you don't have to look at any of that crap in the start menu.

Step two, disable all the telemetry that comes enabled by default.

Step three, disable the auto updates so you never get inconvenienced by a restart for no reason.

Step four, enjoy what is essentially Windows 7, with exception to the additional settings panel, but you still have the old control panel so it's not such a big deal to me anymore.

It's still disgusting that Microsoft feels they have the right to do this and force promoted apps on the general public, this is the real problem, people who don't know any better that are being taken advantage of without knowing how to protect themselves, and or disable all this crap.

Sounds like skipping step one all together is the easiest way to avoid the crap that's going to come down the win 10 pipe,I've been an insider, installed on 4,rolling back a second one now, I may keep it on one just for shits and giggles ,and to prove a point.

so I installed with the gpu on the 3570 k, then tried to jnstall a graphics card later ,and the system keeps hanging on boot,do I have to uninstall the onboard gpu driver(don't remember installing one)to install a dedicated gpu?or install again with the dedicated gpu in the system..? I never had this issue before, anyone else?

Known issue at least with nvidia drivers. Download DDU, reboot in safemode, use DDU to remove drivers and set windows update to no longer download device drivers (this can be done in the windows update settings too) then download your drivers from the manufacturer.

I've never trusted the windows default drivers since 3.11 days. Vista and 7 default drivers or downloaded from updates were notoriously bad as well.

You didn't see an ad for MS Office in the notification center as soon as 10 was installed? It's usually there waiting for you.

Didn't notice it if it was there.

"Get Office" and "Get Skype" are preinstalled on Windows 10 (and arguably should not even exist). Xbox and OneDrive are ads too; those are the kinds of things that should only be installed for people who specifically approve them (like Skype itself).

I turned all that stuff off immediately, it's not that hard to do.

The entire Windows 10 start menu is basically an ad for Windows mobile. MS could put up a billboard with the "tiles" motif, without even having any text in any of the tiles, and people would know what they're advertising. That's why having tiles was never up for discussion in 10 after the failure of 8: Using 10 as a vehicle for advertising had already been set in stone.

Like I said in my first post. Install Classic Shell right away and never look at that start menu again, I totally agree the tiles GUI menu is complete stupid and an utter waste of desktop real estate, but you don't need to ever look at it, depending on your installation media you can have Classic Shell's installer on it and run it before you do anything else. I recently configured several system with new installation of Windows 10 and on a USB drive I had all the exes I needed so I don't even have to open IE/Edge which I also remove entirely and nuke Cortana. If you can't be bothered to do any of that then of course stick to Windows 7, but I still install all the same basic programs, the only difference is having to configure it to not spy on you and not update without your permission.

Currently I see absolutely NO advertisement for anything, my system uses about the same amount of RAM as it did when running Windows 7 but it is faster in some regards, starting up and shutting down in particular, but my old Windows 7 OS had gotten pretty janky due to the hundreds and hundreds of updates it had over the years.

No Ads here - upgraded to 10 from a fresh install of 7, don't use Edge though.

Perhaps this is US / Europe targeted? (I reside in .au)

If you mean Vulkan, it's not an operating system.

Same here, no ads yet. If it comes to it, I will just replace the start menu. Problem solved? We'll see. I also used anti-beacon.

The problem is that 10 "PRO" should not be doing any of this.

I upgraded my step-dad's laptop last year and when I got on it today it was chalk full of games and other crap he will NEVER use but are allowed to run in the background. It takes like 30-45 second to login before removing them 1-by-1 with CCleaner because you can't uninstall many of them with Windows.

After they were all removed it was fast as flash. Acceptable for Home, but not Pro. Offices everywhere getting Candy Crush and other games installed in the background. Security risk and huge hassle.

He's saying that we won't need M$ for DirectX anymore since Vulkan can run on any OS and is supposedly on par with DX12, which requires Win10.

Sorry M$ I block the ad domains themselves. But I have seen the live tiles. They're empty. ;-) Until I know that someone is policing the ad domains for malware ad's I cannot afford to unblock this.

That's odd. I haven't seen a single ad in any of the places mentioned or anywhere else for that matter. I guess the anti-spy software I installed is working better than I expected. Yay me.

I also don't use Micro$ofts start menu. Classic Shell baby!

For crissake just switch to linux already. lol

If you look deeper, you can see that the way Microsoft has sprinkled the very mobile-looking UWP design language throughout the desktop version of WIndows 10 is nothing more than an ad, in what amounts to an internal form of product placement. So is the focus on programs being called "apps" throughout Win 10 ("app" being a word usually associated with mobiles... hint hint!)

The ads in the start menu and the lock screen are just some of the more overt ads we've seen thus far. What awaits Windows 10 users in the future? Who knows? The sky's the limit! They've already got your approval to install anything on your PC they want.

MS has somewhat blunted the criticism for its use of Win 10 for ads with its free upgrade offer, as people are used to suffering ads in "free" versions of things, but ht has never been "free." If it were, you could download a copy right now to install on your Vista PC or business PC in an enterprise setting. It's not a free product; you have to have a pre-existing valid license to get it.
I saw the preinstalled apps, that is it. I simply uninstalled them and any other app I did not want, including the Windows Store and OneDrive.

I tried Windows 10 on a client's pc. It was the most frustrating operating system I have ever seen in 40 plus years of repairing pcs. The only reason that the client came to me was that he could not access his files. I suggested that he put every thing on a external hard drive and wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit. One happy customer and I discovered that I am not going to update any of my own machines.
You have been working on computers for 40 years and could not grasp Windows 10? It is mind-numbingly simple. Instead of suggesting he go back to maybe 8.1, you sent him all the way back to 7? Good lord, please tell me where you are located so I can tell people to steer clear.
