Windows installation problem

Hi guys,
A friend of mine has just bought a portable computer and he asked me to set it up but I faced a problem I can not solve.
First:I tried to install the usual XP on it but I got the following problem:Windows can not find any hard drives.
Then: I made a partition and set its file system(I did that a lot of times and I set all available ones just to see whether it worked. It did not.).
Then:I tried with Linux Suse but portable computer got stuck three times.
Then:I decided to try with Win 98. I copied its files by using a Linux running in a bootable flash drive and installed it. Everything seemed fine until I restarted the system. I got an error that said that there was a device that was making that problem(As far as I remember it had to do something with the memory.).
Then: I tried again with XP but that time I copied all its files on the hard drive and started the installation(Actually, I did not start the installation because I got another error which said that there was a problem with Windows and that's why it will restart the computer to prevent it. Below that there was some info about the problem and it said again that it was a hardware one.).

Do you have any ideas?

Defective drive, defective drive cable, and incorrectly applied jumper are the three most common findings when somebody brings their computer to our shops. Others are dirt in drive cable socket on motherboard, cracked component on motherboard or motherboard that has become brittle with age, corrosion on connectors if in a humid climate, incorrectly setup drive (some must be first setup with manufacturer software that is downloadable... also known as low level format in some cases), incorrectly grounded motherboard, damaged power socket or power adapter, damaged or defective power supply (will show up with a power supply tester.)
Good luck to you. Let us know the reason that worked for you.

Thank you RayBay, but this was not the problem. Obviously, I was misled by the messages I had seen that the problem had to do with a hardware component because all the errors I got said so, but the problem was very simple.

As I said in my previous post the portable computer is brand new. I have found out that it is not compatible with anything but Vista. I personally do not like Vista but that was it.

Is there a way to set up XP, Linux, or anything on it but not Vista?

BTW:Although I have searched on the Internet for more info about the problem with that portable computer I have not found anybody having that kind of problem.

Of course there are ways, but I cannot comment specifically since you have not listed the brand and model.
If you can boot up, you can use free software such as SysSpecs, or Belarc Advisor, to determine what components are installed... because you will need the WXP Drivers for the chipset, video graphics, ethernet connection, modem, and probably the BIOS... depending on whether the manufacture makes them available on their website. They usually do, but not always on VISTA machines... so you need to know what they are in order to find them.
Please list the brand, model, and configuration of that machine here.

The model is ASUS A7S-7S009.

I have called the support centre and I was told(by the manufacturer) that there is not a driver available for any OS but Vista. I checked their site and I could not find a driver for XP, *nix, or whatever.

Do you have any ideas?

So is this an ASUS laptop computer, a Toshiba Satellite, or one of the Czech brands and models. The driver is available for WXP if you can read Czech... and the WXP drivers in many of these computers and models will work:
