Windows Installer errors

  1. Hi,
My present windows XP installation is quite fresh and I've got problems already. I can't install most of the software and each one gives a different error relating to windows installer. One of them being error 1607. The Windows Installer service is missing under services.msc. I have tried a couple of solutions listed on other websites like setting the permissions in regedt32.exe. I have also tried the registry fix from http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm but the service goes missing again after a reboot. Some have suggested a re-installation of windows XP but I wouldn't want to do that. I have also tried installing the 3.1 version of the Installer but it still doesn't work. Is there a solution to this problem?
EDIT: Now it seems to be all messed up and when I use the msiexec /unregister command I get the "This application has failed to start because msi.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem" error.
