The messenger icon appears in the systray. How can I get rid of this? I will never use it. In the preferences, I have "unchecked" the run when windows starts up & allow messenger to run in the background.

there is a program that can be downloaded by the name of MessengerDisable,I do not have a link but it can be Googled and downloaded once u downlod it run it and it will completely uninstall Messenger if that is what u want done.

Try this...

Go to run command and input msconfig
Go to start up tab
uncheck the Msnmsgr box

This will stop the OS auto loading messenger when Windows boots.

There is no msnmsgr in msconfig. I also went into the general tab of outlook express & removed the check regarding automatically logging into messenger, but it still shows in the systray

I think I finally got it. I went into Program access & defaults - custom & unchecked enable access. No it doesn't show up. Probably could have also gone into remove windows components & removed it there also

spybot search & destroy has a section on Startups.
Unchecking the box will leave the registry entry BUT disable the startup.

perform this ONCE/Login id
