Windows XP several attempts to boot

Windows appears to be loading and then hangs - there is stuff displayed on the monitor etc..

Can take up to 3 or 4 times for it to eventually load all the way.

The machine functions normally after it has finally come on.

I'm asking this for a friend so I don't have all the spec.

windows xp sp3
1gb ram
it'sa compaq desktop type of deal (ex-office computer)
