WXP to 7 upgrade

Can I update an old dell inspirion 5100 from xp to win 7 and if so where do I look to find instructions? I know I can format the hdd but the problem is the drivers. I think there is a program in windows 7 that allows some hardware devices that used previous versions of windows to work with w7. Is that true and will it work?

You probably can use Vista 32-bit drivers (available from Dell website) with that. There is no such program that allows drivers from previous Windows Driver Model to be used with Windows 7. However since Vista uses at least almost same WDM, Vista drivers may work.

So basically you'll need bootable Windows 7 installation media and drivers. Then just boot from installation media and hope it works. If it works, install drivers and hope they also work.
