HELLO THERE,

i AM USING XP SERVICE PACK2 IN A FAMILY USED COMPUTER

QUESTIONS:
1.a
AS ADMINISTRATOR WHEN I DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE DO ALL USERS GET
THE DOWNLOAD. SOME DOWNLOADS GIVE YOU THE CHOICE OTHERS DO NOT.
DO OTHER USERS HAVE ACCESS TO THESE DOWNLOADS

2. IF RUNNING MALWARE / SPYWARE SOLUTIONS DO THEY CLEAN ALL USERS.
OR JUST THE ONE ID.

3.DO I HAVE TO ACCESS ALL USER ACCOUNTS TO EMPTY COOKIES AND INTERNET FILES

BASICALLY AS ADMINISTRATOR CAN I ACCESS THE OTHER ACCOUNTS WITHOUT GETTING THE PASSWORDS FROM OTHER USERS.

PLEASE ADVISE AS IT IS CAUSING ME A BIT OF CONFUSION.

BEST REGARDS

normally, the updates are applied to the SYSTEM and thus shared by all. The exception is special software, licensed on a per user basis, in which case you will see this as a program that can only be used by that one user

2. IF RUNNING MALWARE / SPYWARE SOLUTIONS DO THEY CLEAN ALL USERS.
OR JUST THE ONE ID.

login as ADMIN and it works the way you would expect ... again system wide

3.DO I HAVE TO ACCESS ALL USER ACCOUNTS TO EMPTY COOKIES AND INTERNET FILES

As ADMIN, not really. you can go to that users Documents and Settings, locate the appropriate location, and delete them. This is browser specific information, so post which browsers you're using and I'll try to map the locations for you.

BASICALLY AS ADMINISTRATOR CAN I ACCESS THE OTHER ACCOUNTS WITHOUT GETTING THE PASSWORDS FROM OTHER USERS.

for all users on your system, you will be able to access all of their data.
be very carefull here; if you modify and then save one of their files, you will
become new owner and they will no longer have access to that file.
you will not be able to log into their email inbox or other services.

I can say from what I have done
if there is no prompt for all or you in loading program
it will load for admin only or the account used to setup if allowed
if you want others to use it
you need to assign permissions to that folder for read write execute of the program then you need to log in there system and add a short cut to desk top
or they can do this if they know where the program is
I have never seen a issue on license of users versus machine except with servers
there may be a faster way to do this as I.T. guys do it all the time for remote networking

thanks for prompt reply

thanks for your prompt reply.
all questios answered thank you.

But when i access user accounts with a password I cannot gain access.
I use both explorer and firefox.
some microsoft programs cannot be accessed through firefox.
can you tell me how to access other user accounts.

the reason i need access is to monitor software that is downloaded. I do not want other users using it.

or.

sometimes spyware will report no access to passworded accounts

thanks again

to share access to a program (after install), choose a location that is common
to All Users, eg \Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs

to start a program whenever the system is started, place a short cut in
\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

thanks jobeard
i get the sharing bit now.
but can i access other passworded accounts as administrator?

thanks again and sorry for being a pain in the ****!

you can access their DATA.

what are you trying to do, login as one of them to check something specific?

XP-Pro has Group Policies which can be used to corral the users needed,
and then limit or totally inhibit things like MS Install.

I'm guessing you need to monitor the Internet usage of family members.
google for products like 'Net Granny' or 'Parental Control Software'

I do not want to monitor them but as i have said. when i use spyware solutions
some files throw up problems that cannot be accessed. these are behind other family accounts with passwords.
we are talking 20 year olds here. i realy do not want to monitor what they are doing.
i want to be able to clean all users accounts of spyware without asking them for their passwords. You can imagine the abuse when i ask them for them.

I also want to download sofware and decide wether to share with them or not. Some software does not give you the choice to download yo one or all users.

thanks again

just for the record

btw: right clicking on a program or shortcut->Run AS
enter the user Logon and the correct Password
will run that program under that used-id.

One would expect that Run AS from an Admin account should allow
the effective user to be anyone -- link many other systems SU $ANYONE --
but MS requires use of the password.

maybe you did not get assign permissions
where you put folder
assign the permissions as read, execute, may need write also
to a user and or groups
if you got a bob on machine as user
in permissions setuo
window type bob to be generic assign bob to power users then just add power users to the space
the object window now shows the admin and bob check boxs for there permissions below read write exe.
you can see who is doing what by adding report logs to mmc plugin .but thats not easy to setup
if you have router it may have logging that you can use to send admin email or just put in folder
most users don't have rights to run a dwnld exe file
but movies are diff thing
it may be possiable to stop specific type of dwnld but I have never set this up
canned software for watching and controlling traffic is best bet

ps as admin you should know all passwords

right lads.
thks to jobeard
so administrator has to have all passwords to access the accounts.
this appears to be the easy way out.
thks to samstoned- but I got lost at the beginning of your solution.( no offence)
will look at it when I not so tired

thks again lads
