XP problem after booting

Hi!

After turning my computer on (Aspire 5670), everything seems to boot ok, but when I want to unfold the Start menu, the cursor arrow changes to the sandglass and I can't perform any action. The Start menu would not unfold, I cannot even hightlight any of the icons on desktop.
It's not the touchpad problem- it's working fine.
I recently formatted my disc and reinstalled XP.

This problem happens almost everyday, every other time I turn on the computer.

Does anybody know what that is and how to avoid it in the future?

Thanks,
Kris.

Could be hard disk going bad. Have you run chkdsk with full checks? Also run HDD manufacturers test software (download). Could be battery/power supply problem too.

I ran chkdsk- nothing strange happened.
I've noticed that it boots easier when I remove battery.
What should I do?
