xp will not load??

i use torrent downloading sites alot which is probably why this has happened, but anyway when i start my computer i get the dos boot screens but after that the screen just stays black and xp does not load, i have left it like this for a few mins but no change, i already tried loading in safe mode but there is no change. Note that the computer does not automatically shut down or anything like that it just stays black and there are no error messages. anyone know what the problem is?? help please
