YouTube Vanced is shutting down after owners receive a cease and desist from Google

What just happened? Folks behind the famous YouTube Vanced app have announced that they’re discontinuing the project due to "legal reasons." The decision follows a cease and desist letter from Google that has forced the closure of the platform, alongside halting any further development and distribution. For now, existing Vanced users can continue to use the app normally, that is until YouTube pushes out an update that causes the app to stop functioning properly.

YouTube Vanced has been around for a few years, swelling in popularity as an alternative to Google’s official YouTube app, once the latter started sprinkling more, longer ads and sponsored sections in videos. As with browser extensions on the web, Vanced even resurrected the dislike counter on mobile, a feature that YouTube controversially removed from the platform in November last year.

The modded client also gave users free access to YouTube Premium features, including background playback and picture-in-picture mode, as well as added customizations and a dark theme. Ultimately, it had to blip on Google’s radar, which it now has.

News of the discontinuation was also posted on Reddit, with The Verge reporting that the Vanced project owners were sent a cease and desist letter from Google, asking them to change the app's logo and remove all references and links related to YouTube products.

Vanced creators note that the app’s current version will continue to work, though an official YouTube update could eventually break it someday. For now, Vanced is expected to function normally for two years, after which it’ll become outdated as YouTube and its back-end technology continue to evolve.

I just want something that blocks ads on Google Chrome on Android. (I already use Brave sometimes, but I have too much crap in Chrome to switch completely)

ProtonVPN comes with NetShield, which blocks ads globally on the device.

Besides that you should try to switch from Chrome regardless.

Many are just talking about ad blocking, I use Vanced not for the ads, but for the features its doesn't offer worldwide like PiP and background play.

Yes these features are available in YouTube premium but Premium is not availavle worldwide...

Except where not available: Just pay for the damn product (Premium), if you don't want the ads. Geez. The entitlement nowadays.
*braces for incoming barrage of hate*

The Samsung browser isnt built on chrome and has a built in ad blocker that works quite well. Also gets roughly the same battery run time as chrome mobile, as opposed to firefox which chews through battery with an adblocker installed.

Screw seperate apps, thats just nonsense.

Imagine paying $12 per month to do what can be done for free...

Use Adguard DNS as a private DNS in your phone and it will stop ads globally.

Most Youtube adds can be skipped after 4-5 seconds. But since you can't bring yourself to watch the ones that are 15 seconds, I'm guessing Youtube will get over it.
And I hope they get over it too dude,

I may be only one pointless person but the fact they can run an ad at a pristine 1080p while the actual video I want to see barely gets through as a vaseline smeared blob sets me off.

I have more than enough actual movies and anime to watch, youtube and its gaping mouth thumbnail stars can kick rocks.

What can be done for free
You can use their service for "free" financed by ads, or if you don't like that, then you can pay for it, then you don't have ads. Simple as that. Those are the only two product options, there is. Trying to circumvent that, is just trying to abuse a loophole. I chose to pay (more than 12$) for their service, as it has value to me. If it doesn't, I'd stop using it.

The post that really got me was

I wonder if he can imagine paying $12 a month so people that do the work can get paid? I highly doubt that he does any work that anyone can just steal because they found a way to get it for nothing.

This is what happens when hypocrisy and laziness join together.
