Zoom out of control on Google maps

When I use Google Maps, the zoom feature has a mind of its own, continually oscillating between maximum plus and minimum minus. I am using mostly Safari 7.1.3 on an iMac with OS 10.9.5. This computer is relatively new, after my older iMac died about 6 months ago. I don't remember having the zoom problem at all on the old computer.

This may be a browser problem, as it doesn't seem to happen on Firefox. The absence of replies suggests that it isn't a common problem.
