Why not? The first 20 pins on a 24 pin connector are the same as those on a 20 pin connector. The issues with not using the adapter is that the latch doesn't line up, and on some motherboards there are capacitors (or other objects) at the end of the 20 pin socket that the "extra" four pins could hit, and prevent full seating of the connector.

But it seems to me that if that were the case, then you could take a razor blade and VERY CAREFULLY separate the last 4 connectors from the other 20...

Don't power this thing up. Should be moved over so that the tab clicks into it. Right now, you have the last 16 and the 4 pin connected.

It's a 24 pin connector, not a 20 pin. The first 20 are identical to the 20 pins on the standard 20 pin connector, so even though the latch doesn't line up, this connection works.
