Hey, I still use one to control servos at work. It runs like a rock with Gentoo on it.

This machine listed for over $2,500.00 new. I have one just like it; got it for $12.00 at the Salvation Army. Mine had a perfectly good, operational copy of Windows 98 SE, a 10 Gig HD, and and 96 megs of ram. Why did I buy it, you might ask? Because my girlfriend also has one just like it!!! Hers had a creaky old ME operating system when she retrieved it from her brother; they had shared it in high school. I thought I could make it work again, but the OS was hopelessly corrupted and it crashed all the time. The system re-install disc was long lost. I had read about Linux on the web for a while, and now I finally had a good reason to give it a try. I installed the latest Ubuntu," Fiesty" and upped the memory to 512megs. That machine now works just great for everything my GF uses it for: writing, surfing, email, pictures, etc. Most people could get by 99% of the time with a computer like this one, and you would never need a more powerful computer unless you did intense graphics, sound, or video work. Ubuntu is FREE and comes with tons of great FREE programs--everything you could possibly need. 500mhz and 512 megs of ram will still take you a long way, if you use an efficient operating system, and these computers can now be had for nearly nothing. My GF could wreck any computer, but she has yet to crash this one since the Ubuntu setup...it is rock solid! This upgrade could take many old but still useful machines out of our waste stream; it makes good economic and environmental sense. We are shipping mountains of old computers away to be dumped in third-world countries, where they are creating a toxic mess. As for the Dell I just bought, I may try Xubuntu on it eventually (an even leaner OS), but the Windows 98 SE works OK, and it came with lots of other Microsoft goodies. I'll keep it for a spare computer, a backup for my GF, maybe make it a dual-boot machine...easy to do with an Ubuntu install CD!

the older models sucked balls. my dell dimension 2400 for example can only handle a max of 1 gig of ram. has only pci slots. and runs a celeron 2.2 ghz single core. this creaky old thing will be the death of me.

I have to say I'm a fan of their optiplex series, but I always find myself liking Workstation PC's. Especially My Dad's 3.0GHz Opty X2 Tower T-T.

Our dimension 4600 has an AGP 4/8x slot, has 512mb ram (max 4096mb), 2.66ghz p4, 128mb 5200FX, 6 channel audio, we had it made in 2004 with xp pro. Still runs just fine.
