Morcheeba isn't a rap group & where the heck is Mos Def in that list ? & no, mentionning Black Star alone won't suffice.

The majority of the artists I mentioned are hiphop artists, not mainstream for the most part... Bling shouldn't come to mind.. try 'em once and see for yourself

and Mos Def alone has only a couple decent tracks, really... in my opinion...

I do have a few though, such as

Mos Def - Ms. Fatbooty

" " - Brooklyn

" " - Six Days

" " - Close Edge

" " - Pay Day

otherwise, Blackstar's got it all

... also, somehow acquire "Morcheeba - Big Calm"

What about "Umi says", "New world water", "Modern Marvel", "The rapeover", "Ghetto rock". You have to admit those are good too.

Never could get into rap/gangstar rap. It's not because I'm 57, or white. I hear it all the time. My kid sends me stuff to listen to. I have heard and do like Immortal Technique. That's some very powerful social commentary. It's the schnitzel in the drizzel or whatever in the heck they are saying. I've found most rap to be a lot of weak ***** ghetto whining, and disrespectful towards women. But then I live in Watts right between the Crenshaw Gangster Mafia Bloods, and the 111th St. Neighbor-Hood Crips, so getting woken at 3AM by some idiot driving by with that stuff at 200dBA has left me a bit jaded. Oh ya, and I think Necro's Dead Body Disposal is gruesomly over descriptive, but quite funny. He should be on the list!

If you're looking for intelligent rapping (like Immortal Technique), someone else already mentioned Sage Francis, which is a bit more like slam poetry than rap. As someone else mentioned the Roots, I'll note that they also have intelligent lyrics, I'm thinking of the song ***** Galore. You should also obviously check out stuff by Rage Against the Machine. The Chicago producer Meaty Ogre has a track featuring Robust called Flibbertigibbit (I think it's a single...the record label is Galapagos 4) that has really inspired lyrics. Also, check out MF DOOM (aka Viktor Vaughn). The album he released with Madlib (aka Quasimoto) (and together they are aka Madvillain) Madvillainy is overall pretty awesome, in particular I'm thinking of the song Figaro. DOOM's lyrics are sometimes a bit confusing or not very lucid, but he uses lots of really fun words in a very creative way.
