Mass-mailing worm exploits Asian tsunami appeal

By Derek Sooman

On January 17, 2005, 1:12 PM

In something not terribly amusing in virus news, malware authors have created a mass-mailing worm that pretends to be an appeal for donations towards the help of victims of last month's Asian tsunami disaster. It is known as VBSun-A. Pretty low, huh? Perhaps this is a sign of desperation on the part of virus writers if they are resorting to such depths.

"Duping innocent users into believing that they may be helping the tsunami disaster aid efforts shows hackers stooping to a new low. This gruesome insensitivity is a despicable ploy to get curious computer users to run malicious code on their computers." - Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos.

  1. I don't think that it is a desperate ploy by virus writers. Sadly, the tsunami brought people together from all over the world, and it is obviously the easiest thing to exploit at the moment.Of course, it is still very despicable that they do such cruel things.
