Fake FBI e-mails doing the rounds

By Derek Sooman

On November 22, 2005, 5:10 PM

Fake e-mails that appear to be from the FBI, warning computer users that the agency is monitoring their Internet activities have begun to circulate. The messages tell the recipients that their Internet use has been monitored by the FBI and that they have accessed illegal websites. You can guess what is coming next, which is that users are then asked to open an attachment and answer questions. Hmmm, now isn’t it a safe bet that those attachments are virus infected?

"These emails did not come from the FBI," a statement said. "Recipients of this or similar solicitations should know that the FBI does not engage in the practice of sending unsolicited e-mails to the public in this manner."

  1. Those attachments are sure viruses. I got that same email plus other fake ones from aol, yahoo, and others domains that have the same attachment (about 75KB or so) and it has the katest Sober variant in there... I was a bit suspicious when I received a lot more junk mail than usual...
