BitTorrent files suits against those tarnishing BitTorrent name
Company president Ashwin Navin told ZDNet yesterday: "We're sensitive to people calling their software BitTorrent to achieve a certain level of popularity in order to distribute spyware and adware."
Interesting stuff. There will be an examination period followed up by a small licensing fee to use the BitTorrent name along with other software. Opera, for one, will be providing a search window inside version 9 of their browser and as such is one of the first to use this new license. Both websites and programs have used the BitTorrent name in the past, mostly for bad reasons, and it's good that an OSS company is able to fight back.

Opera didn't just jump on the idea recently. There was a release of Opera 8.2 (although I am not sure it was public) that included the bittorrent features that Opera 9 is going to have. |

BitTorrent should be careful about making waves in the legal community, its not like the majority of it's users are using it for legitimate purposes. It is nice to see them trying to protect their user's from greedy/malicious people... It's a policy that more mainstream companies should try to adopt. |

Interesting development... though I'm not sure how it will come out. BitTorrent is currently one of the favored tools of the pirate community and I can't think of many warez, crack, or such pirate related sites that don't try to install spyware, trojans, and other malware. |

Hey, what they're about to do is going to improve the torrent community. If this lawsuit falls through, the chances of downloading what you want will greatly improve. (Not that I condone downloading torrents!) Best of luck to BitTorrent! |

I'm sure there are a fair amount of people out there who consider BitTorrent to be just another P2P program with it's days numbered. With terms such as licensing fees, and name and trademark lawsuits being tossed around, and one of the top three browsers integrating their search window, I would think this would create a bit more legitimacy and credibility for BitTorrent. Good for them. They are certainly not all about illegal file trading. It's a brilliant technology. |

Let's not forget that BT has some very valid uses and there are companies trying to utilize them. Unfortunately, the features that these companies want are also the features that download-kiddies exploit to their own purposes....which is a shame. |
