Apple's iPod Hi-Fi speakers

By

Nick Farrell of Theinquirer.net has a poor thing or three to say about the new iPod Hi-Fi speakers from Apple. Clearly a sign that Apple has sunk deeper into becoming an entertainment kit, claims Farrell, the set up is a glorified boom box that is just downright ugly, he claims. Whilst the design was a little too post-modern for my tastes, ugly is perhaps exaggeration.

But what about the sound quality? Cnet, here, trumpeted the release under the headline "Steve Jobs is a self-confessed audiophile" failing to realise that a true audiophile would rather perforate their own ear drums than listen to compressed MP3s at home.

They will also tell you that any set of speakers under $500 is not an audiophile system and there are better 'active speakers' out there.

Fair points alright. I somehow doubt "audiophiles" are filling an iPod with ALAC (Apple's lossless codec) files. It's a portable media player, simple as that.

Definitely not an audiophile peaker.. Look at that thing, all cosmetic preferences aside, it looks like a single 6" woofer and two 3" "tweeters" (*ahem* woofers *ahem*)Hrmmmmmm.. just looking at it, it seems like it will be very specific to mid-range frequencies which will result in a flat and directional sound.. not the much needed soft airy room filling sparkle that sends shivers down an audiophiles back and sets a smile to his/her face.

Waste of money and investment time. Apple should stop concentrating on the Ipod so much. To me, its a one hit wonder. They won't be able to improve it. However, if they paid more attention to their PC range, maybe they could stop wating their time in Ipod which, to be frank, is selfsustaining and doesn't need all this. ITs an MP3 portabable player not a home HIFI system!

I think more than anything this just appears to be a big box to display your iPod on. The alternate is too much for Apple to handle, use the iPod's Line-Out & (cringe) connect it to a stereo system without an eye catching pose for the iPod.
