Sony says low price PS3 will be upgradeable

After some concerns about the lack of “modularity” on the lower-priced version of Sony's PS3, Sony has come out to qwell some fears. As it stands, many of the features that it will lack could be later added on, putting Sony basically in between PS3s and common modders. They had this to say:

"Both configurations will support bluetooth PS3 controllers. The only non-upgradeable feature of the 20GB configuration will be the HDMI output."
They will also be able to have the drive replaced and upgraded as well from the stock 20GB to whatever size the hardware itself supports, with Sony saying “it is a computer, after all”. There will also be another adapter allowing the use of MMC/SD/CF and other type cards. Good news for those looking to cut down on the cost of consoles, with how outrageous it has become.

Its the lack of the HDMI that worries me (and any educated and informed consumer) most. The whole justification for the high price of the Ps3 is mainly Blu-Ray. While its not going to be adopted at first, HD optical copy protection will be with us sooner or later, and will require HDMI ports. So why is it we're spending $500 on a console that has blu-ray when we wont be able to use it once copy protection schemes kick in?I dont care about all the other stuff.. its the HDMI, or lack of it that makes the $500 version pointless.

Unless you never intend to get a HDTV with HDMI inputs you should go with the higher priced one. I plan to get one at launch so I hope there arent shortages like the 360 had. I made a deal with a friend that if he buys the 360 i'd buy a PS3, I really hope the PS3 is as good as they say it is or I'll end up with the short, expensive end of the stick....
